Winter is Here!

We have been SO busy in our classroom!  It's been a while since our last blog post.  After returning from Christmas break, we got right back into our regular routine.  It was pretty exciting, because we had a little snow! This was the perfect opportunity to explore snowflakes.

In art, we learned how to draw snowflakes.  They each have 6 points, but are very different.  I set up some materials in our classroom for exploring snowflakes a little further. We discussed what instruments were available to use to help us- magnifying glasses, a ruler, and color wands!

Investigating our Natural Surroundings

Fall is a beautiful time of year, and a perfect time to learn about the changing leaves!  We took a nature walk right outside our classroom's back door.  What did we find? Leaves of all shapes, sizes, and colors, interesting sticks, buds, and berries. We also saw squirrels looking for food. This led into a short discussion of what squirrels do in the winter.

Then, we each brought in different types of leaves we found around our homes.  We made some beautiful leaf rubbings with oil pastels, graphed them by color, as well as sorted them by size.

The class also made some pretty interesting little leaf people! We've had a great time learning about leaves!

Shapes, Shapes and More Shapes

This morning we explored shapes using popsicle sticks.  The children used them to create hexagons, squares, triangles, and trapezoids.  They were required to use problem solving and teamwork, too!

Fun with STEM

As an extension of our apple investigation, I gave the boys and girls a challenge..."What could you build using apples and toothpicks?"

Of course, they all though this was crazy! Build with apples? Why not? There were so many interesting creations:
-a robot
-a person
-a sheep
-a triangle
-Mrs. Redmond

We will have many STEM challenges this year in Pre K.  We will be sure to post them so you can check them out!

Apples, Apples, Apples

We made a delicious treat today for Fun Friday.  Everyone took turns and helped make applesauce.  Each friend was able to help cut (using plastic knives) the apples, pour the sugar, add water, stir, or add cinnamon.  We put it in the crock pot and let it cook!  Our room smelled amazing and this afternoon we all tasted the applesauce.  It was yummy!

Not only was this fun, but we talked about the process before we began.  So much was learned during applesauce making!

How do you think we make it?- making predictions
What do we do first? Second? -ordinal numbers
What will it taste like when it's cooked? -making predictions
Using a recipe- following simple directions
The smell of the cinnamon- using sense of smell
Using a measuring cup- making comparisons of volume and capacity
Taking turns and collaboration with peers

It's almost Fall!!! We've been reading books about apples, learning about where they grow, measuring them and weighing them.  There has been a lot of discussion about apples and we've all agreed that they are delicious!  We will even be making a special snack with them on Friday...stay tuned to find out more!
We added some plastic apples, oats and cinnamon (yum!) to the sensory table yesterday.  Our friends love exploring here!  They are pouring, filling cups, scooping and using their imaginations during this time.  It also feels very interesting!

Our class also made name folders today during Daily 5 today.  Inside the folders are letter cards which are used to build names.  Different materials will be added to the folders to help us with name recognition.

Daily Devotions...

We start each day with saying the Our Father, pledge of allegiance, and listening to the devotion of the day.  Today, we read about "wonder".  Some of us wonder what will happen tomorrow.  We wonder which  friend will play with us at recess.  Only God knows the answers to all of our wonders!
